Ecological benefit

High ecological value as a crucial late-summer pollinator resource for low-light habitats and a provider of vital nesting structures for native insects. The deep, tubular shape of the flowers is uniquely suited for specialist long-tongued bees. It heavily supports native species like mason bees, leaf-cutter bees, bumblebees, and little carpenter bees.

Notes

Prefers soils rich with organic matter, but can grow in rocky soils as long as they aren't too dry. Valuable for woodland-edge pollinator communities. Well-suited for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and naturalized areas. It spreads gently over time via underground rhizomes to form attractive, dense native colonies without being aggressively invasive like non-native garden mints.
